Trento - day 1

We just rambled today with no set plan, just quietly taking in central Trento. People watching as much exploring, with an afternoon rest thrown in. It's been another warm day with the temperature rising to 29°C by the afternoon. 

My photos will be a medley of our day. 

The Piazza Duomo is the main piazza in Trento and, as the name suggests, the main focal point is the Duomo di Trento, the Trento Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of San Vigilio.

The current cathedral dates back to 1212. It was built over the site of a small church which was built in 397 AD.

This fresco 'Madonna Enthroned with Child' dates back to the 1300s.

Central to the Piazza Duomo, with the Duomo di Trento in the background, is the Fontana del Nettuno, the Fountain of Neptune:

Built between 1767 and 1769, the fountain brought a continuous supply of fresh water into the city. On it's opening in 1769 the magistrate gave the order that the fountain was not to be polluted by washing nappies, tripe, frogs and similar items.

Connected to the Duomo, on another side of the Duomo Piazza, is the Palazzo Pretorio and the Torre Civica. The Palazzo, built in 1220, was the residence of the Bishop-Princes. It is now the present day Diocesan Museum.

The tower, Torre Civica, roughly 42 metres in height, was once used as a prison and a bell-tower which called the people of Trento to the Piazza Duomo for major events. These events included executions.

A weekly market is held in the Duomo Piazza and it just happened to be today.

Trento, also known in English as Trent, is a city on the Adige River in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol in Italy. It is the capital of the autonomous province of Trento. In the 16th century, the city was the location of the Council of Trent. It was part of Austria and Austria-Hungary before it was annexed by Italy in 1919.
