Day 14 Braunschweig - rest day

We've had a good rest day here in Braunschweig. We've caught up on washing, caught up with family back home, and generally relaxed. 

After all our country walking and small towns and villages/settlements we've stayed in Braunschweig seems to be a busy bustling city. One day of rest is enough and we're ready to walk on tomorrow. 

We didn't race around and try to see everything, that's not what rest days are for, so I don't have many photos but here's what we have taken:

Dom St Blasii - St Baslii Cathedral - a Evangelical Lutheran cathedral founded in 1173 by Henry III, the Duke of Saxony, known as Henry the Lion.

The Imervard Cross is said to represent Christ victorious over death. 

The Dankwarderode Castle, the residence of Henry the Lion:

The Rathaus, with it's 61 metre tall tower, was built in 1894-1900.

The Magniviertel, the Magni Quarter, one of the oldest districts in Braunschweig with it's half-timbered houses dating back to the 1400s. 90% of Braunschweig's city centre was destroyed during a massive air raid on 15 October 1944 and only a few old buildings and streets survived. 

The Rizzi Hous, also known as the Happy Rizzi House, was designed by artist James Rizzi and was opened in 2000 after two years construction.

Then, late this afternoon we met with Angelika Rolle, the route sponsor for the Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel area. Angelika has finished her Via Romea Germanica pilgrimage, she walked into Rome just last week. Angelika started from her front door in a village not far from Braunschweig and walked one or two weeks at a time, taking nine years to complete it.

Angelika took us on a short walking tour and then to a bar/cafe where we spent an hour or so chatting together. She came to Braunschweig on her Vespa and wanted us to see it so we walked with her back to where she had left it. She said that it is 25 years old.
