Then we were off. Through the narrow streets of Stade, through parkland, past communities and into the countryside, past farm houses and massive barns, and small settlements. Northern Germany is very flat, and there were many very long stretches at times.
For much of the time the Jakobsweg (the camino route to Santiago) shared the same path as us. We will crisscross with various Jakobsweg routes regularly .

| There were many trees in blossom - mostly apple or cherry. |
There were no services along the way but we had a stop at a golf course. Two men chatted with us, asked if we were English and when we said that we are New Zealanders one of them said, 'Oh god, you're Kiwis.' They said we could sit out on their deck to have a break and told us where the toilets were.
